S. Eliza Halcomb, Evan Schwarz, and Michael E. Mullins OVERDOSES Overdose, General GENERAL PRINC IPLES ü According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), there were over 2 million exposures and 1,146 fatalities related to toxins in 2010 (Clin Toxicol 49(10):910). Overdoses are common in the emergency department, and although they are rarely fatal, it is important to follow some general guidelines while caring for the poisoned patient. ü Patients who present to the hospital with an overdose can be challenging for the clinician. This section will begin with a review of the general approach to the poisoned patient, followed by a discussion of specific ingestions. ü When managing the poisoned patient, as with all patients, it is vital to make sure the patient has patent airway, intact breathing, and palpable pulses. Beyond the basics of general emergency management, it is important to remember physiologic principles when approaching the poisoned patient. Quite often, patients can be categorized into one of the five toxidromes based on simple clinical examination findings.

متن کاملIntegration of mutation and chromosomal damage endpoints into 28-day repeat dose toxicology studies.
Two endpoints of genetic toxicity, mutation at the X-linked Pig-a gene and chromosomal damage in the form of micronucleated reticulocytes (MN-RETs), were evaluated in blood samples obtained from 28-day repeat-dosing studies typical of those employed in toxicity evaluations. Male Wistar Han rats were treated at 24-h intervals on days 1 through 28 with one of five prototypical genotoxicants: N-et...

Fernblock® is a standardized commercial aqueous extraction of the leaves of the tropical fern Polypodium leucotomos promoted as an orally active photoprotective substance. In a previous battery of toxicological tests on Fernblock®, no genotoxicy was observed and no oral toxicity was observed up to 1200 mg/kg bw/day. The current study was conducted in Hsd.Han Wistar rats using doses of 0, 2000, ...

Two recent intratracheal instillation toxicology studies in rats clearly show that a naturally occurring quartz, with occluded crystal surfaces (quartz isolate), produced significantly less inflammatory response than a crushed reference quartz (DQ12). Respirable-size quartz isolate was isolated from bentonite parent rock, without crushing or the use of chemicals, to ensure that the surface prop...
